The planned arena in Oberrad, Frankfurt, extends over a 6-hectare site on the city limits of Offenbach, near Oberrad’s herb gardens. It will accommodate around 12,000 spectators and accommodate both sporting events and concerts. The location is central: only 5 kilometers from Frankfurt city center and 3 kilometers from the center of Offenbach. Surrounded by the Oberrad green belt and close to the Main with a wide range of gastronomic offerings, the arena combines nature and city.
The arena will be designed as a “house of the landscape” and “house of the city” and should fit harmoniously into the surrounding area. The compact design integrates the playing field, stage, stands, side rooms and parking spaces for 2,300 cars and 2,000 bicycles with a workshop and charging stations. It is important to treat the landscape sensitively: delivery takes place discreetly within the building to avoid an industrial look.
All paths lead to a platform three meters above street level as the main entrance. The forecourt offers space for activities, while the glass facade makes the hall interior visible. A planned high-rise building will be integrated into the overall concept in order to create a harmonious interplay between architecture and open space.
The oval shape of the stands creates a closed atmosphere and promotes a dynamic communal experience. The arena becomes part of the Oberräder green space and contributes to cooling and irrigation with rainwater through green roof areas planted with herbs from the Frankfurt Green Sauce.
As an active house, the arena focuses on sustainability: photovoltaic systems are intended to cover energy needs, and environmentally friendly materials such as wood and recycled concrete are used. The building should be a pioneer for climate-friendly construction and attract people every day, not just on event days. A walkable roof offers space for activities such as jogging or outdoor events and offers impressive views of the Frankfurt skyline. Transparent and inviting during the day, the facade changes its appearance in the evening to encourage visitors to identify with their arena and the organizers.
