The Stone House, built in 1464 by the Cologne merchant family Melem, is the last Gothic stone building still existing in the middle of Frankfurt’s old town. In 1962 the house was given a modern extension and converted for exhibition purposes. Since then it has served the Frankfurter Kunstverein, a modern art institution recognized beyond Frankfurt’s borders.
As part of the renovation and modernization measures, the entrance area including the foyer was enlarged. The open arcades of the Stone House, which were rebuilt after the war, have large, frameless glazing. They initially served as exhibition areas.
A few years later, a successfully operated museum café with its own entrance was installed here. Since the renovation, the exhibition rooms have had new illuminated ceilings and air conditioning.
The construction work carried out shows a respectful treatment of the listed building structure. The stone house and its extension have been adapted to modern requirements for exhibition buildings and at the same time their essence has been preserved.
