31.07.2025 – Quality of Living through a Sense of Community
In the competition for the renovation and new construction of the student residence hall at Ginnheimer Landstraße 40-42 in Frankfurt am Main, the entry by Zvonko Turkali Architekten won third prize.
The goal of the planning was to create a green, livable living environment for students that fosters a sense of community. High-quality housing and diverse amenities are intended to strengthen social ties, promote solidarity, and sustainably support psychological well-being.
A central element of the urban design concept is four freestanding, solitary buildings carefully embedded in the park-like landscape. The open structure allows for visual connections, creates meeting spaces, and promotes spatial connectivity with the surrounding neighborhood. The new buildings are based on the surrounding development in terms of scale and character – from open villa structures to denser perimeter blocks.
The apartments are being constructed using prefabricated construction methods, which use less material and require less transport volume than modular construction. The new buildings use a resource-efficient timber construction method.
The outdoor areas are designed as green spaces that promote community. Spacious lawns, terraces, and communal outdoor areas offer a variety of recreational qualities and promote neighborly interaction. The removal of sealed surfaces, targeted rainwater retention, and evaporation basins create a climate-resilient, ecologically valuable outdoor space.
