The Frankfurter Sparkasse building, located in the heart of Frankfurt’s banking district, was built in 1957 according to plans by the well-known Frankfurt architect Johannes Krahn. A special feature of the large customer hall was originally the elegantly curved concrete shells of the roof, whose filigree skylight strips ensured an even distribution of daylight inside. This rare interior atmosphere disappeared during the renovation work carried out in 1970. For energy and building physics reasons, the skylight strips were covered and the customer hall was lit exclusively with artificial light from then on.

As part of the renovation work now required on the roof structure, the cladding was removed from the skylight strips. Forty years after the first refurbishment, the customer hall has thus regained the lost daylight. What’s more, in conjunction with the floor-to-ceiling glazing facing the ramparts, a green belt created around the historic city when the fortifications were dismantled, the previously introverted customer hall now has an attractive connection to the outside. A stone floor, two circular fountains and cherry wood wall cladding characterize the customer hall, which is used for regular concerts due to its special acoustic quality.
