The urban development framework plan for the Rebstock is based on the design of the American architect Peter Eisenman. Eisenman’s idea was to develop an overarching system for urban development and at the same time to define a binding code for the shape of the buildings and the treatment of their facades. Based on geometric rules, a district should be created with clearly legible street spaces, folded building volumes and moving open spaces inside the block.
In the implementation of the project, some specifications from the framework plan were not implemented across the board.
These include the planned folded landscapes, which proved to be impractical, and the largely closed building corners, which lead to significant problems with the use of daylight in residential construction.
Even if the demanding theoretical project was not realized in all respects, Eisenman’s idea resulted in an independent district with exciting urban spaces.
The aim of our design was, based on the urban master plan including the design code, to create an identity-creating place that meets the requirements for living on the border between urban and rural areas to a high degree.
The five to seven storey buildings define the street space as a “perforated block edge” and create a protected courtyard space inside the complex with a high quality of outdoor living.
The houses have apartments of different sizes suitable for different types of living. Thanks to the clever organization of the floor plan, the floors, which have largely been developed as two-story apartments, can be used by singles as well as for living with several generations. Two-story townhouses integrated into the shape of the building have their own entrances and private gardens directly adjacent to the building. They are particularly suitable for families with children.
