The kindergarten building, which was built in 1956, no longer met the requirements for modern child care due to several functional impairments and limited space. The stated goal of the St. Wendel community, the developer of the project, was to remedy this circumstance and at the same time realize an expansion by two group rooms including adjoining rooms.

Because of the poor structural condition, the single-story structure was dismantled down to the basement. The significant increase in floor space compared to the existing basement is made possible by a lightweight wooden construction. The spatial projections of the two-story new building made of red larch wood are arranged in such a way that a building body that rests in balance is created. The total weight of the new building was reduced and the loads were distributed evenly into the existing basement.

The interior of the daycare center is clearly zoned: the functional rooms are on the north side facing the street and the group rooms are on the south side. Large windows allow plenty of daylight to enter the rooms. They offer generous views of the greenery of the neighboring cemetery, the playground and the city skyline.
