Train Station in Palmengarten
Since 1972, the ‘Palm Express’ is offering train rides in the Palmengarten in Frankfurt. Now, forty years later, the train received its own train station.
The original idea for the new train station was based on greenhouses from the 19th century, especially the Crystal Palace at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. Up until today, the distinctiveness of train stations is a result of the interior and its outward appearance.
This specificity is also noticeable at the new train station in the Palmengarten. With aid of continuous roof glazing, which is typical for greenhouses, the train station is characterized by lightness, filigree and entering daylight, while simultaneously creating the atmosphere of a concourse. The exterior shows a mostly closed facade, which is built of vertically installed larch boards. A super-elevated canopy and a station clock enable the public to spot the train station from a distance.
