Frankfurt Art Society

The Stone House (Steinernes Haus), which was built in 1464 by the Cologne merchant family Melem, is the last existing Gothic masonry construction in the historic district of Frankfurt. In 1962, the house was extended with a modern addition and reconstructed for exhibition purposes. Since then, the Frankfurt Art Society, which is recognized as an institution for modern art beyond Frankfurt city borders, resides in the building.

In the course of the reconstruction and remodeling measures, the entrance area including the foyer was extended. The open arcades of the Stone House, which were redeveloped after the war, received extensive rimless glazing. At first, they were used as an exhibition space. A few years later, a successfully running museum café with a separate entrance was built into the arcades. Since the renovation, the showrooms are equipped with new light ceilings and air conditioning.

The constructional measures show a respectful handling of the heritage-protected structure. The Stone House and the addition are adjusted to the modern requirements of exhibition buildings while maintaining their own character.
