Café Siesmayer in Palmengarten
The design is based on two considerations: On one hand the café is being perceived as as a gathering place for people of every provenance, couleur and living situation in the style of a vienesse café. On the other hand the building is to mediate between the city and its largest green oasis.
The elongated well-proportioned cube extends the hospitable area in direction of the Palmengarten. The applied step-terrace answers to the topography of the Palmengarten. The facades however react to the buildings of the Westend by a balanced proportion of open and closed surfaces. A longitudinally ceiling without support as well as a light gap allow the view through the café onto the surrounding green.
Recoverable but not obligatory expensive materials – for example oak parquet or natural stone in soft colors – create a sensual place of rest and encounter. The café literally turns into a bridge between two urban islands.
