The Frankfurt Rhein-Main Chamber of Skilled Crafts has maintained a vocational training and technology center since 1972 in Weiterstadt, a village with 25,000 inhabitants in the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg. The institution is one of the oldest and at the same time largest cross-company vocational training centers in Germany: it encompasses 1,100 spots for apprentices, 35 educational workshops, ten classrooms and three computer rooms as well as a cafeteria.

Following a three-year planning and construction period, a new boarding school was added to the premises in 2019.

The five-story building is approximately 60 meters long and 14 meters wide and is built over the former parking lot on Rudolf-Diesel-Strasse. Its parallel orientation to the street as well as its combination with the existing buildings creates a protected courtyard inside the complex, which is ideal for various outdoor activities.

The house offers accommodation for up to 115 guests. Common rooms and small apartments for the supervisors are positioned at both ends of the building.

Fairfaced concrete, porous concrete stones, oak wood in the area of the entrances to the rooms as well as coloured linoleum are the essential materials in the access areas. The guest rooms feature fairfaced concrete ceilings, white plastered walls and linoleum floors.

The facade is built of white chiseled concrete blocks with quartz sand. The joint material, which is also enriched with quartz sand, gives the facade surface a very homogeneous, slightly iridescent appearance.

Large window openings ensure good daylight utilization in all rooms. The north facade, which is affected by poor daylight conditions and the noise of the nearby railway line encompasses elements that are emerging from the facade, so-called "butterflies". These butterflies provide the necessary sound insulation and allow direct light from the east and the west to enter the rooms.
