Building permit granted for the first Jewish Academy in Germany

After intensive consultation and a fast processing, the building authorities of the City of Frankfurt issued the building permit for the construction of the Jewish Academy at the end of December 2019.

In a joint statement, City Treasurer and Mayor Uwe Becker and Planning Director Mike Josef expressed their pleasure that a "Jewish think tank" of nationwide significance can now be realized.

With the award-winning design by Turkali Architekten, the Academy will enrich the entire cultural campus and continue the tradition of Jewish social sciences at this location, said Mike Josef. The Jewish Academy is intended to foster the discourse on Jewish life and Jewish culture among the population. Offered seminars, conferences, lectures and further education courses are directed towards Jews and non-Jews, says Harry Schnabel, member of the Central Council of Jews in Germany.

The Jewish Academy will be located at the southern tip of the newly planned cultural campus. The educational institution's ensemble will include a new building and a neo-classical villa. In the new building a large event hall for 200 people, an exhibition room, several seminar rooms and a dining hall are planned. The old building accomodates a small café as well as meeting and administration rooms.

The project is financed by the Central Council of Jews, the Federal Republic of Germany, the State of Hesse and the City of Frankfurt. Construction work is expected to begin in late summer.
